Iga Swiatek US Open 2022

‘You rock it!’ – Iga Swiatek congratulated by Polish sporting royalty

Iga Swiatek has been praised by sporting greats from her native Poland after claiming her third Major title at the Slam season-ending US Open.

The 21-year-old, who herself is now a sporting icon in her nation as the first world number one from Poland on either the WTA or ATP tour, received congratulations from former world number two Agnieszka Radwanska as well as Champions League winning footballer and three-time Polish Sports Personality of the Year recipient Robert Lewandowski.

“You just rock it! Huge congratulations Iga Swiatek,” 2012 Wimbledon finalist Radwanska tweeted after the final, tagging the champion.

“Congratulations Iga!” began Lewandowski in his own tweet. “You’re a great champion and you’ve proven it yet again on the biggest stage. I am so happy for you.”

Swiatek has now matched former world number one Angelique Kerber with her third Slam crown, and only trails Naomi Osaka’s four titles among active players after the retirement of Serena Williams earlier in New York.

Moreover, the tour leader has more than double the ranking points of any other WTA player, and extended her perfect record in finals to 10-0 by defeating Ons Jabeur on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

“It’s hard to describe it in one sentence. But I’m just super proud of myself,” Swiatek described in her post-match press conference on winning the trophy.
