Iga Swiatek US Open 2022

Iga Swiatek completes perfect 10 & extends gulf from WTA field

By winning her maiden US Open title, Iga Swiatek has now won 10 of 10 finals she has contested at WTA tour level.

Moreover, the world number one has won all 10 of those contests in straight sets, only once being pushed beyond 6-4 in a set, that being by Ons Jabeur in Saturday’s final as Swiatek won 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).

Of those 10 final victories, three have been at Slams, five at WTA 1000 level, one at 500 level and one at 250.

Seven of the 10 have come against players ranked inside the world’s top 10, and the average ranking of her opponent’s has been 15.2, though her 2022 Miami Open final against a 77th ranked Naomi Osaka brings that average outside the top 10.

In the live rankings, Swiatek sits at 10,365 points, more than double the tally of second-placed Jabeur at 5,090, and qualified for the year-end WTA Finals in June as a result of claiming her second French Open title.

Looking back on the WTA tour, the Pole is also the first woman to win two Majors in a single season since former world number one Angelique Kerber won the Australian Open and US Open in 2016. She is also the first woman to claim the French Open and US Open double since Serena Williams in 2013.

Finally, Swiatek now has just one Slam surface left to conquer, the grass of Wimbledon. While her best result there is reaching the fourth round, which she achieved in 2021, the 21-year-old did win the junior title at SW19 in 2018 aged 17.

Can she recapture the grass court form that took her to that trophy and emulate her world number one predecessor Ashleigh Barty to win Majors on every surface?
