‘No one can stop me now, but me’ – Bernard Tomic hungry to make a return to the top

Australian ‘bad boy’ Bernard Tomic has said in an Instagram video “I’m back, I’m hungry, and I’m ready” as he aims to make a sensational return to the top ten.

Tomic has recently said that he feels he isn’t “that stupid little kid anymore” and is ready to leave his childish antics in the past. He also believes he can make an astonishing return to the ATP top ten after reaching 17th in the world with just “60% effort.”

The Australian enjoyed a successful start to his tennis career at junior level, winning two junior Grand Slam titles aged 15 and three Orange Bowl tournaments.

However, Tomic was then widely labelled as a ‘bad boy’ as a result of some of his controversial comments and actions. Most notably, he was fined £45,000 following allegations of tanking at Wimbledon in 2019.

Tomic appealed this decision but his appeal was rejected and he was offered an ultimatum to correct his unsportsmanlike behaviour.

In a video posted to his Instagram profile, Tomic claims he will use hate comments he receives to fuel his return.

“I’ve had a lot of hate in my life. But I can’t give up. You don’t think I see the hate comments? It hurts.

“In the past I used to let it get to me and react out of stupidity. But now I’m using it as fuel.

“I’m back. I’m hungry, and I’m ready. No one can stop me now, but me.

“I’m training, I’m sweating, I’m pushing, I’m fired up. Whatever it takes to get back on top.

“Hard work pays off. I’ve put my blood sweat and tears into this sport. I have come back before. It’s time to set the record straight.”
