Leylah Fernandez to lead Team Canada at Billie Jean King Cup Finals
Leylah Fernandez will lead Team Canada at next month’s Billie Jean King Cup Finals alongside 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu.
The world number 38 is her nation’s highest ranked player as they take on Switzerland and Italy in Group A. The event kicks off on 8th November in Glasgow, UK, culminating in the final on the 13th.
Fernandez and Andreescu will join Carlo Zhao, Rebecca Marino and two-time mixed doubles Slam champion Gabriela Dabrowski.

Leylah Fernandez will hope to put individual difficulties behind her at the event. After a Grade III fractured foot saw her out of action for two months she returned to competition in Toronto in early August. The 2021 US Open finalist competes at the San Diego Open next in her first play since Flushing Meadows last month.
Canada’s best Billie Jean King Cup result came all the way back in 1988. There they made the semi-finals before falling to eventual champions Czechoslovakia. Since then, they have reached the quarter-finals once, in 2015.
Moreover, should the Canadians advance from the group stage they will look to take advantage of the absence of world number one Iga Swiatek of Poland.
