Brazilian star Joao Fonseca won the biggest title of his career on Sunday when he defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Swiss Indoors final.

With his 6-3, 6-4 victory against the Spaniard, Fonseca broke a record held by Juan Martin del Potro while also becoming the first Brazilian to win a title of such magnitude since Gustavo Kuerten at the 2001 Cincinnati Open.

The 19-year-old also became the second-youngest winner of the Swiss Indoors title, behind Jim Courier.

Fonseca is quite possibly the most promising talent on the ATP Tour, and he has been tipped to form a new ‘big three’ alongside Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

Jimmy Connors reacts to Joao Fonseca’s Swiss Indoors triumph

Eight-time Grand Slam champion Jimmy Connors has discussed the impact of winning in building a player’s confidence on the ATP Tour.

Speaking on the ‘Advantage Connors’ podcast, the American said: “There is a time when you don’t care what time of year it is. It’s just a matter of being able to get the win for the confidence.

“Supposedly, we should be at the end of the year, so this should be really good for him to roll into the Australian Open to take that confidence at that winning feeling.

“We talk about there being nothing more important in sports, especially in an individual sport, than winning. That breeds confidence.

“So if he can continue that, and that feeling into the Australian Open. He is young, he is big, he is strong. He has got the game and the size.

“The more you guys talked about him, the more I have watched him… it has given me somebody extra to watch.”

Since winning the title in Switzerland, Fonseca has travelled to France to take part in the final Masters 1000 tournament of 2025.

In the Paris Masters first round, Fonseca defeated Canadian player Denis Shapovalov, whom he also beat at the Swiss Indoors event.

In the next round, Fonseca will face Karen Khachanov, who won the Paris title in 2018.

Joao Fonseca’s first ATP Tour win

Joao Fonseca made his ATP Tour main draw debut at the 2023 Rio Open, where he lost to ninth seed Alex Molcan in the first round.

A year later, Fonseca claimed his first ATP Tour win at the same tournament, defeating Frenchman Arthur Fils 6-0, 6-4.

The Brazilian defeated Cristian Garin 6-4, 6-4 in the next round, before losing to Mariano Navone in the quarter-finals.

Fonseca has gone from strength to strength since then, stunning Andrey Rublev in the 2025 Australian Open first round, and winning two ATP Tour titles.

In February 2025, Fonseca defeated Francisco Cerundolo to win his maiden ATP Tour title. His triumph in Switzerland eight months later marked the Brazilian’s second ATP Tour triumph.
