Teenage star Joao Fonseca made history on Sunday, winning his biggest ATP Tour title to date at the Swiss Indoors Open.
Fonseca, who dedicated the triumph to his parents, defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 6-4 to win the ATP 500 tournament.
Consequently, Fonseca is the first Brazilian to win a title of such magnitude since Gustavo Kuerten’s 2001 Cincinnati Open triumph.
The 19-year-old has risen to world number 28 and looks set to remain in the ATP top 30 for the foreseeable future.

Joao Fonseca is the youngest South American in the Open Era to win ATP-level titles on multiple surfaces in a season
By defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Sunday, Joao Fonseca wrote his name into the South American history books.
As per OptaAce, Joao Fonseca has become the youngest South American in the Open Era to win ATP-level titles on multiple surfaces in a season, surpassing Juan Martin del Potro in 2008.
Fonseca was aged 19 years and 60 days when he accomplished the feat, while del Potro was aged 19 years and 315 days.
Fonseca won his first ATP Tour title on the clay courts of the Buenos Aires Open. The Brazilian defeated four Argentine players on his way to the title in February, including Francisco Cerundolo in the final.
His second title was won on the hard courts of the Swiss Indoors Open.
As for del Potro, he achieved the feat in 2008 after winning four titles that season. He claimed clay-court titles in Stuttgart and Kitzbuhel, and hard-court titles in Los Angeles and Washington.

Joao Fonseca’s Australian Open opportunity
Fonseca’s rise to world number 28 has handed the Brazilian the opportunity to be seeded at a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.
It would be somewhat fitting for Fonseca to achieve this feat at the 2026 Australian Open. After all, he first caught the eye of onlookers after defeating Andrey Rublev in straight sets at the 2025 Australian Open.

The Brazilian star will now turn his attention to the Paris Masters, where a strong run would strengthen his Australian Open seeding further.
Fonseca faces Denis Shapovalov in the first round, whom he beat at the Swiss Indoors event.
