Joao Fonseca captured the biggest title of his career so far on Sunday, defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to win the Swiss Indoors title.

Fonseca captured his second career title in Basel, following his triumph at the Buenos Aires Open in February.

On Sunday, the 19-year-old proved too strong for Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, whose wait for an ATP Tour title continues.

The Brazilian is now projected to rise to a career-high ranking of world number 28, putting him in a great position to qualify for the 2026 Australian Open as a seeded player.

By winning the title in Basel, Fonseca has also forced himself into the same conversation as Jim Courier.

Joao Fonseca is the second-youngest Swiss Indoors champion

Joao Fonseca, who recently took part in the Laver Cup, defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday.

As per media information published by the ATP, Fonseca is now the second-youngest champion in Swiss Indoors history.

Jim Courier is the youngest Swiss Indoors champion. The four-time Grand Slam champion won the title in 1989 while 19 years old.

Fonseca also made Brazilian history on Sunday – he is the first Brazilian player to win an ATP Tour title above the 250 level since Gustavo Kuerten’s 2001 Cincinnati Open triumph.

Fonseca’s triumph in Switzerland will do little to dampen the sky-high expectations that many have for the 19-year-old.

The Brazilian is a star of the future, and the present.

Brad Gilbert reacts to Fonseca’s victory

Brad Gilbert, Andy Murray’s former coach, has offered his immediate reaction to Fonseca’s triumph in a post on X [Twitter.]

He said: “Very impressive stuff from Fonseca, taking out Alejandro Davidovich Fokina for [the] Basel [Swiss Indoors title].

“The Spaniard is still looking for that first ATP Tour title. Surely will come.

As for Davidovich, he is perhaps the best player on the ATP Tour not to have won a title.

The Spaniard has lost five ATP Tour finals, including three in 2025.
