David Goffin US Open 2020

‘I was very precise,’ says David Goffin after conquering Alexander Zverev

David Goffin feels good following his win over Alexander Zverev to make it to the last eight in Monte Carlo.

David Goffin overcame Alexander Zverev 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) to reach the quarter-finals in Monte Carlo for a third time in his career.

‘It was a great game,’ Goffin said after the match. ‘I was solid, served well, moved well and was very precise on the forehand. ‘Winning three matches in a row brings confidence, of course, but the most important thing is the game.’

David Goffin defeated Marin Cilic and Marco Cecchinato in the first and second round respectively before facing Zverev in the third.

When asked about his thoughts on his next opponent, Dan Evans, Goffin had this to say:

‘We are always surprised when Novak [Djokovic] loses before the final, against a guy who, on paper, is not a clay court specialist. But Dan is an incredible and talented player.

‘I always thought he could play well on all surfaces. Maybe in his head he wasn’t a clay player in the past, he wasn’t very confident on this surface. But today, it looks like he is more professional, more stable in his game.

‘He has raised his level and he knows how to play well on the dirt. He’s not easy to move on the court, he’s very smart on the court.’

David Goffin has only faced Dan Evans once before, in the 2020 ATP Cup on a hard court, which Evans won 6-4 6-4.

‘The last time I played him I lost but I have the weapons to beat him on clay if I play like today,’ Goffin added.

‘I’ll have to be strong and aggressive to try to push him.’
