Holger Rune US Open ATP 2021

ATP young gun Holger Rune records a career first in dominant display

The ATP rising star got his Moselle Open main draw campaign off to a blistering start against Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles.

The Danish 18-year-old is defeated Thomas Fabbiano and world number 107 Philipp Kohlschreiber to come through qualifying and face world number 119 Bernabe Zapata Miralles.

The teen proceeded to annihilate the Spaniard, registering a complete shutout of his opponent, 6-0, 6-0, in under 50 minutes on-court, a first double bagel win of the Dane’s ATP career.

Rune won an astonishing 60 of 85 points played in the match (71%), taking six of 12 break point opportunities presented to him by Zapata Miralles.

The teen burst into the mainstream consciousness with a spirited display against world number one Novak Djokovic at the US Open earlier this year, claiming a set off the 20-time Slam champion. Rune was also a qualifier on that occasion.

The young talent made his ATP main draw debut in March of 2021 at the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires, and before the Moselle Open this week has just 12 ATP tour level matches under his belt (excluding Slams), with an 4-8 win loss record.

The teen will next face world number 24 and fifth seed at the Moselle Open Lorenzo Sonego of Italy for a place in the third round.
