ATP prospect Holger Rune registers biggest scalp of career
ATP teen talent Holger Rune secured his most prolific victory in terms of player ranking at the Moselle Open as he storms the indoor hard courts.
The 18-year-old is through to the semi-finals of the ATP 250 event in Metz, France, after overcoming fifth seed and world number 24 Lorenzo Sonego 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-4.
Previously the highest ranked player that Rune had managed to defeat was Benoit Paire at the Chile Open back in March, when the Frenchman was at 29 in the ATP rankings.
The result means that for the second time in his young career Rune is into an ATP tour level quarter-final, with the Chile Open in March again being the last occasion.
Both in Chile and in Metz, the teen came through qualifying to enter the main draw of the tournament. In the first round of Metz, the Dane secured his first ever double bagel on the ATP tour, defeating world number 119 Bernabe Zapata Miralles 6-0, 6-0 in under 50 minutes on-court.
Rune recently came to the attention of the wider tennis world when he took on world number one Novak Djokovic in the opening round of the US Open main draw having come through qualifying.
The youngster put up a spirited display, even winning a set of Djokovic, before fading as cramps barred the Dane from playing to his best ability.
