Matteo Berrettini reveals why it ‘would be unsafe’ for him to play Madrid Open

Matteo Berrettini has pulled out of the Madrid Open, with the Italian citing illness for his withdrawal from the Masters 1000 tournament.

Berrettini returned to the ATP Tour in March after a nearly seven month injury hiatus, reaching the final of the Challenger event in Phoenix and claiming his first title since 2022 in Marrakech.

As a result, the former Wimbledon finalist climbed back inside the top 100, but could not back his success up at the Monte Carlo Masters and lost in the opening round to Miomir Kecmanovic.

The 28-year-old was expected to continue his comeback in Munich, but elected to skip the ATP 250 tournament for a short training block instead.

However, it appears that Berrettini has suffered another setback, with tonsilitis and a fever forcing him to withdraw from competing at the Madrid Open.

“I have been struggling with an illness the last few days which has now evolved in to tonsilitis and a fever,” Berrettini told fans on Instagram. “Following another assessment my doctor advised it would be unsafe to try and compete in Madrid. Now my focus shifts to recovering as quickly as possible and preparing for Rome.”

Berrettini has only played in the main draw of the Madrid Open once in his career, reaching the final in 2021 before losing to Alexander Zverev.

The current world No.98 will be hoping to have recovered in time for his home Masters 1000 tournament in Rome, that begins on Tuesday 7th May.
