Alexander Zverev gives upbeat update on ankle injury with Instagram post

Alexander Zverev has shared video of him walking without crutches as he continues his recovery from the horrific injury he sustained in the semi-finals of Roland Garros.

The world number two has not played since tearing several ligaments in his right foot during his heated French Open semi-final battle with Rafael Nadal back in June.

But now, having missed Wimbledon and undergone surgery on the foot, Zverev is back on his feet and walking without support for the first time in six weeks.

“Alexander Zverev 2.0,” the German captioned a video update on Instagram, with Eye of the Tiger’ accompanying.

The 2020 US Open finalist has not yet confirmed when he will return to competition, but has made clear he will only compete at the New York Slam this year should he feel fit enough to challenge for the title.

“I won’t be someone who plays after being ready for it for one second,” he told Bild recently. “If I play the US Open then [I want] to win and not play one or two rounds. I will only return if I have this form.

“I don’t know whether [I will return at] the US Open because I would have to play one or two tournaments beforehand. But I haven’t written off New York.”

After a career-best six titles in 2021, Zverev has gone 0-2 in tour finals in 2022 in Montpellier in February and the Madrid Masters in May, losing to Alexander Bublik and Carlos Alcaraz respectively.
