WTA Finals champion Garbine Muguruza ‘dreaming big’ with Slam goals

Garbine Muguruza had a resurgent 2021 season culminating in her first WTA Finals crown, something she wishes to build on in 2022.

The Spaniard became the first from her nation to win the WTA Finals when she defeated Anett Kontaveit in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Now, she wants to push on and round out her Slam collection for the Career Grand Slam.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted,” Muguruza told EFE. “Especially when I played the final in Australia last year, which is a Slam title that I don’t have.

“Yes, I would love to close the Slam circle. Any tennis player would, right? But it is a goal I have, as well as to stay on top of tennis, competing for trophies. It is always my goal.”

Muguruza has 10 titles on the WTA tour, including a title at the 2016 French Open and Wimbledon 2017. She was runner-up to Sofia Kenin at the 2020 Australian Open.

Following her WTA Finals triumph, she is back to world number three for the first time since July 2018.

She was world number one for four weeks in September and October 2017, becoming just the second Spanish woman to achieve the feat after Arantxa Sanchez Vicario.

“I now manage it better,” Muguruza added on her approach to expectations and pressure. 

“Before, I never wanted to share my goals much just in case. Now I am more open to honestly saying that I would like to win this or another tournament, complete this, that.

“I think it’s great. They are the goals that everyone dreams of, I love them and I put pressure on myself but I think that’s good. As long as you dream big it is good that you feel pressure.”
