WTA ace to be honoured by Real Madrid this week
A top WTA talent will be honoured by Real Madrid at their next league fixture against Athletic Club Bilbao at the Santiago Bernabeu.
In November, Garbine Muguruza became the first Spaniard to reach the final of the WTA Finals since Arantxa Sanchez Vicario did so in 1993, the year Muguruza was born.
However, she then went one better than Vicario, defeating Anett Kontaveit in the final in Guadalajara, Mexico, to become the first ever spanish champion at the WTA Finals.
In recognition of her impressive 2021 season and Finals triumph, Muguruza will be honoured by sporting giants Real Madrid.
She will perform the ceremonial kick-off at their next league match against Athletic Club Bilbao on 1st December at the hallowed Santiago Bernabeu.
The WTA Finals title was Muguruza’s 10th on the tour, adding to two WTA 1000 level crowns and two Slam titles.
Those major titles came at Roland Garros in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2017.
In 2021, Muguruza reached two WTA 500 finals early in the season before winning the WTA 1000 Dubai Tennis Championships in March, her second title at that level.
She then won the WTA 500 Chicago Fall Tennis Classic in October ahead of capping her season with the WTA Finals title.
She accumulated a 42-17 win-loss record over the season and now sits at third in the world rankings for the first time since July 2018.
No doubt Muguruza will be looking to push on from her resurgent 2021 season to continue climbing the rankings, potentially back to world number one which she first achieved in September 2017 following that year’s US Open.
