‘We’re hungrier than anyone’ declares Stefanos Tsitsipas on Greece at ATP Cup
Greece have ambitions as high as any other nation at the upcoming ATP Cup according to their number one Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Thanks to Tsitsipas, Greece have competed at both ATP Cups to date in 2020 and 2021, but they are yet to progress beyond the group stage.
Now, despite the world number four being the only player player on the Greek roster ranked within the ATP top 350, he believes his nation can go deep in Sydney.
“I have faith in my team,” Tsitsipas said ahead of the event.
“I think we can sort it out in two matches [and] not have to go all the way to three [in each tie].
“For each and every single one of us representing Greece on an ATP Cup level just means a lot.
“I know there are plenty of Greek-Australians that are going to go wild watching us play.”
Greece will face Poland, Argentina and Georgia in their group, with each tie consisting of two singles matches and a doubles rubber.
Their number two is 399th ranked Michail Pervolarakis who is 0-5 across singles matches at the ATP Cup inn 2020 and 2021, and 0-3 in doubles.
“Greece is known to excel in team events, such as football and basketball, so it’s in our nature,” Tsitsipas continued on national pride.
“We love playing team events, and that’s where we leave the best out of ourselves on court.
“I think we have a team of young players that are just hungrier than anyone else. That’s what makes us kind of stand out and we have so much energy.”
The remaining players for Greece are Stefanos’ younger brother Petros Tsitsipas, ranked 771st in the world in singles, Markos Kalovelonis, ranked 855th, and Aristotelis Thanos, ranked 1076th.
Greece take on Poland first in their group, a match-up that will see Stefanos Tsitsipas battle with world number nine Hubert Hurkacz.
Hurkacz won their last meeting at the Miami Open en route to his maiden Masters 1000 title, but Tsitsipas leads the head-to-head 6-2.
