Roger Federer French Open 2021

WATCH: Federer displays immaculate calm en route to win

Roger Federer has got his 2021 grass campaign off to a winning start in Halle, and he did so in his own trademark way.

The Swiss maestro made his 17th tournament start at the German event, dispatching Ilya Ivashka in straight sets, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 in just 90 minutes.

Federer withdrew from the French Open prior to his fourth round match against Matteo Berrettini in order to better rest and prepare for the grass, and so far the decision has reaped rewards.

The first set was an uneventful affair, with no breaks and the 10-time Halle champion taking the opener in a tiebreak.

Federer stayed composed throughout, even when faced with an overhead whiff early on.

The service holds continued into the second, with Federer setting up his first match point on the Ivashka serve at 4-5 40-Adv. The Belarusian held off the Swiss to take it to 5-5.

Federer took his fourth chance at 5-6 though, moving on to the second round.
