US Open Popcorn Matches: Medvedev-Kyrgios showdown and Coco Gauff contest

The US Open begins to get serious with the first slate of fourth round matches, with Daniil Medvedev, Nick Kyrgios and Coco Gauff all in action.

Take a look at some of the popcorn matches that will light up Day 7 in New York.

Daniil Medvedev v Nick Kyrgios

As world number one and defending champion, Medvedev is yet to be tested having not dropped a set in his first three rounds.

But Kyrgios should be a real tough task for the Russian, the Australian leading their head-to-head 3-1, including winning their most recent meeting in Montreal.

Played under the lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium, this is arguably the highest stakes match of the US Open so far.

Coco Gauff v Shuai Zhang

As the most attention-grabbing American talent, 18-year-old Gauff will have the full support of the New York crowd as she takes on experienced veteran Zhang.

The Chinese woman is enjoying her form at the US Open though, reaching the fourth round for the first time to complete her set of second week appearances across the four Slams.

Both women are fighting for their first quarter-final at Flushing Meadows, so you can bet they will bring plenty of fire to the contest.

Matteo Berrettini v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina

Berrettini is going strong in New York, and will take confidence from his win over an Andy Murray in dangerous form.

He has only lost to Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal at Slam level since the 2021 Australian Open, so he is certainly heavy favourite against Davidovich Fokina.

But the young Spaniard lives for the competition, so as long as Louis Armstrong Stadium is rocking this match could go down to the wire.

Liudmila Samsonova v Ajla Tomljanovic

Samsonova came into the US Open with a title either side of the Canadian Open, and has continued that form as she is yet to drop a set at the Slam.

She takes on the woman who ended the career of Serena Williams in Australia’s Tomljanovic.

Fair to say the pair will be brimming with confidence as each hopes to make it to the last eight for the first time at the Open.
