When Juan Carlos Ferrero made a prediction about the future of the ATP Tour in 2024, it was a distinct possibility that his argument would be proven entirely correct.
However, nearly 18 months later, this prediction has fallen wide of the mark.
The coach has seen his student, Carlos Alcaraz, dominate the ATP Tour alongside Jannik Sinner over the last two years, and the pair have shown no signs of slowing down.
In fact, the two stars have combined to win the last eight Grand Slam singles titles, with Alcaraz most recently capturing a second US Open crown.
With Alcaraz and Sinner’s dominance in mind, it is worth highlighting Juan Carlos Ferrero’s comments from 2024.
These remarks conveyed Ferrero’s outlook for the future of the ATP Tour, and have ended up differing significantly from the present-day reality.
Juan Carlos Ferrero said the ATP Tour would become more open than the ‘Big Three’ era

During an interview with Clay Tenis in February 2024, the 2003 French Open champion predicted the tennis landscape would be different to the era dominated by Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
The Spaniard, who was discussing the ‘Big Three’s’ dominance, said: “They’ve proved it, haven’t they? In the last 20 years they’ve won almost every Grand Slam between them.
“I think in this era it might be a bit more open, because there are more players who are in contention to win a title. Not only Novak, Jannik and Carlos.
“You have Medvedev, you have Tsitsipas who is always close, you have Zverev whose goal is to win a tournament, you have Rune who has a lot of potential, there are a lot of players.”
Ferrero could not have been more wrong. Alcaraz and Sinner have dominated the tour over the last two years, contesting the last three Grand Slam finals.
| Grand Slam | Winner |
| 2024 Australian Open | Jannik Sinner |
| 2024 French Open | Carlos Alcaraz |
| 2024 Wimbledon | Carlos Alcaraz |
| 2024 US Open | Jannik Sinner |
| 2025 Australian Open | Jannik Sinner |
| 2025 French Open | Carlos Alcaraz |
| 2025 Wimbledon | Jannik Sinner |
| 2025 US Open | Carlos Alcaraz |
In fact, the last player to win a Grand Slam singles title not named Alcaraz, Sinner, or Djokovic, was Rafael Nadal at the 2022 French Open.
Will a third player join the ‘Big Two’?
In the late 2000s, it seemed Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal would dominate the ATP Tour throughout the foreseeable future.
Then Novak Djokovic entered the conversation, and has since recorded better head-to-head records against both Nadal and Federer.
Fast forward to 2025 and the ATP Tour finds itself in the same situation: two players are dominating and making it almost impossible for any other player to enter the Grand Slam title-winning conversation.
So, who could challenge Alcaraz and Sinner?
Joao Fonseca has been touted as a future star by Alcaraz. However, the Brazilian’s game is still incredibly raw, and needs time to develop.
Could Alexander Zverev finally join the mix? Or could Daniil Medvedev rediscover his Grand Slam-winning form? Both possibilities seem unlikely.
Realistically, any future challenger to Alcaraz and Sinner is likely a player who has yet to emerge on the ATP Tour.
However, there is one name who may have the potential to disrupt the status quo in the future: 16-year-old Wimbledon and US Open junior champion Ivan Ivanov, who is a product of the Rafa Nadal Academy.
