The major change the Davis Cup should make that might convince Jannik Sinner to play

There is one quick fix the Davis Cup can make that might entice the top players to return to the tournament.

Jannik Sinner is skipping the Davis Cup this year after winning the tournament with Italy in consecutive years.

Musetti is also missing the Davis Cup, meaning only Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz from the ATP Tour top 10 will appear at the tournament.

With the Davis Cup becoming less of a priority for players after a very hectic schedule, there is a major change the tournament should make that might mean the top players flock to it once again.

The Davis Cup should not be an annual tournament

The Davis Cup used to be one of the most important tournaments on the calendar, but it’s been outstripped by much of the ATP Tour.

Alcaraz leads the tournament in 2025, but he is absolutely correct to suggest a major change to the international tournament.

At the ATP Finals, the Spaniard said: “I think playing every year, I mean, it is not as good as it might be if you’re playing every two or three years.”

Changing the frequency of the Davis Cup to every four or even two years would make it much more exciting for players and fans.

Players could plan around a less frequent tournament and make the Davis Cup a priority, making it much more competitive and star-studded.

Winning the tournament would become much more prestigious if players only had the opportunity to do so a handful of times throughout their careers.

In a similar vein to other sports’ World Cups, it would make the tournament a real destination in contrast to the forgettable year-end event it has become.

The Davis Cup has never been less star-studded than in 2025

Not only is there a lack of top 10 players at the tournament, but there are few players in the top 50 for this year’s Davis Cup.

Alcaraz, Zverev, and Musetti are joined by Francisco Cerúndolo, Zizou Bergs, Jiří Lehečka, Jakub Mensik, Ugo Humbert, Flavio Cobolli, and Jaume Munar as top 50 players competing at the event.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that some ATP 250 and 500 events have been more star-studded throughout the season.

Part of this is due to some of the bigger countries not qualifying for the event, with the United States and Australia not set for the Davis Cup Finals.

Nevertheless, the tournament has a real lack of star appeal for 2025, and changing the frequency of the event would massively help the event going forward.
