Iga Swiatek swatted aside as Wimbledon sees end to win streak at 37

Iga Swiatek has finally had her incredible win streak ended by veteran Frenchwoman Alizé Cornet, before the second week of Wimbledon.

The 32-year-old downed the top seed and dominant world number one 6-4, 6-2 to inflict her first defeat in over four months.

The result came within hours of fellow Roland Garros finalist Coco Gauff crashing out to compatriot Amanda Anisimova.

She said immediately after the victory: “I have no words right now.

“It reminds me of the time I beat Serena [Williams] on the same court eight years ago exactly.

“This court is a lucky charm for me.”

That victory over Serena coincided with her best ever Wimbledon result, reaching the fourth round in 2014.

Cornet added after defeating Swiatek: “These kind of matches are what I’m living for.

“It’s what I’m practising for every day.”

Her Slam debut coming in 2005, Cornet has played 62 consecutive Major singles main draws since the 2007 Australian Open.

Before 2022 she had reached the fourth round of a Slam five times, but never been further.

In 2022, she has broken her quarter-final curse by getting to that stage at the Australian Open before reaching the second week at Wimbledon for just the second time in her career.

Cornet described herself as ageing like fine wine considering her best season to date has come at the age of 32, an age that a decade ago would often be considered approaching retirement.
