Iga Swiatek ‘finally finds courage’ to share moment with ‘legendary’ Serena Williams

Iga Swiatek relished the chance to meet Serena Williams during the legend’s farewell from the US Open.

The world number one has previously admitted that she never found the confidence to approach the 23-time Major champion.

Now Swiatek, who would only meet Serena on court should both women reach the final, finally seized her moment.

“So, I finally found the courage today and this happened,” the Pole captioned a post on Instagram that she also tweeted. “Congratulations on your amazing journey and legendary career Serena. Huge respect for everything that you have done for our sport and women’s sport.”

In what could be the final match of her singles career, Serena is scheduled to play Danka Kovinic on day one of the US Open in the first night session match on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

A win over the Montenegrin could see Serena face world number two Anett Kontaveit in the second round. If she were to lose to Kovinic, Serena is still scheduled to play the women’s doubles alongside older sister Venus, taking on Czech pairing Lucie Hradecka and Linda Noskova in the first round.

In the top half of the draw, Swiatek faces Italy’s Jasmin Paolini in the first round before a potential second round meeting with 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens.

Further down the line, Swiatek is drawn in the same quarter as defending champion Emma Raducanu, the Brit taking on French veteran Alizé Cornet in her opener.
