‘She’s impeccable!’ – Martina Navratilova gushes over Emma Raducanu talent
The four-time US Open champion sees brilliance in Emma Raducanu as the 18-year-old star moves on to the quarter-finals in New York.
Martina Navratilova was watching on along with fellow US Open champions Billie Jean King and Virginia Wade as Raducanu blazed past Shelby Rogers in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
“Just because Virginia Wade was here it makes it that much more special,” Navratilova said while commentating for Prime Video following the match.
“I did not know she was here, Emma (Raducanu) probably did not know either. It’s a good thing she didn’t.
“What a way of coming out in New York City, right? Getting this far in this tournament and then beating an American on Arthur Ashe court in this fashion.
“Keeping her head about her as well as she did. She might have got an A in her A Levels, but she’s also got an A in tennis psychology because she really knows what she’s doing out there in every aspect of the game.
“And the mental one, that’s the one that takes the longest to get, and she’s already there!”
Raducanu has now won seven main draw Slam matches across her first two Major appearances, and has not yet dropped a set in New York across qualifying and in the first four rounds.
“Her technique is impeccable,” Navratilova added. “Her tennis IQ is extremely high. And the emotional level-headedness that she has, that’s really hard to come by.
“So she’s really the whole package. But as Tim (Henman) said, you don’t want to think about winning right now. It’s Belinda Bencic next, that’s all that matters.”
