‘She was awesome!’ – Two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka brings special guest to press conference

Two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka was accompanied by her young son as she took questions from reporters after defeating 15th seed Elina Svitolina.

The Australian Open champion of 2012 and 2013 came into her presser after ousting the Ukrainian 6-2, 6-0 with five-year-old Leo in tow, both sporting sunglasses.

After Azarenka answered the pre-requisite presser question of how she though the match went, one journalist took the opportunity to create a lovely little moment for the mother-son duo.

“Leo, how did mommy play today?” He asked Azarenka’s son.

“Awesome!” Leo responded, before Azarenka thanked the reporter for the interaction.

“I always feel privileged that I’m able to have [Leo] here,” she reflected later in the press conference.

“These kind of moments are really priceless for me, so for me to be able to share that with my son is pretty incredible.”

On the match, Azarenka was delighted with the aggression she was able to bring against a dangerous opponent like 2018 WTA Finals champion Svitolina.

“[I was] applying a lot of pressure, [with] consistency,” she explained.

“So taking control of my end of the court I think that’s what I’m most happy about.”

Since winning back-to-back Australian Open titles nearly a decade ago, Azarenka has had spotty results in Melbourne, twice reaching the quarter-finals but not progressing beyond the first round since 2016 before this year’s event.

In order to continue her progress Down Under, Azarenka will have to overcome a tough opponent in an intriguing fourth round match-up next.

The Belarusian faces Roland Garros champion and world number four Barbora Krejcikova after the Czech ousted a fellow French Open winner in Jelena Ostapenko in her third round match.
