Emma Raducanu US Open 2021

‘She inspired me’ reveals Cameron Norrie on ‘utterly incredible’ Emma Raducanu

Like so many others, the Indian Wells champion was blown away by the achievement of Emma Raducanu at this year’s US Open.

Ahead of this year’s Indian Wells, Norrie sat at a career-high 26 in the world and was the 21st seed for the Masters 1000 event.

He played exceptionally to overcome the field and claim a second title of his career and first at Masters 1000 level. The Brit had never even advanced past the third round of a Masters event.

Norrie has since praised the Slam triumph of fellow Brit Emma Raducanu, speaking on how her run in New York inspired him too.

“That was utterly incredible what she did in New York,” Norrie told Sky Sports. “To come through qualifying and then to go out and just whack every opponent that she had.

“She won in straight sets and to do that at such a young age. To do it with that kind of confidence and come out and own every match was extremely impressive.

“It will definitely give the girls around her ranking where she was before the US Open a lot of confidence and a lot of belief.”

Prior to Wimbledon this year, Raducanu was 338th in the WTA rankings. After reaching the fourth round there, she leapt to 179th.

She then entered the US Open ranked 150th. After winning the tournament, Raducanu jumped another 127 spots to reach 23rd in the world. She currently sits at 24th in the WTA rankings.

“I was inspired by her triumph in New York,” Norrie continued. “It’s huge for British tennis. I think for sure it’s going to put a lot of rackets in hand for the next generation of younger boys and girls to start playing tennis at home in the UK.”
