Serena Williams Andy Murray to take on number one seeds in Wimbledon mixed doubles third round

Serena Williams and Andy Murray have wowed the crowds at Wimbledon this year and they will continue their mixed doubles campaign against number one seeds Bruno Soares and Nicole Melichar.

Facing off on Court Two today, the doubles teams will compete for a place in the quarter finals.

American Williams comes off the back of playing twice yesterday, after she was forced to work hard to beat compatriot Alison Riske in a closely fought three setter. She then took to court to partner Murray in their mixed doubles second round, however she did not seem at all fatigued as they beat experienced doubles players Fabrice Martin of France, and Raquel Atawo of America 7-5 6-3.

On his return to tennis Murray also was competing in the men’s doubles this year, but he and his French partner Pierre Hugues Herbert suffered a second round defeat to Croatian sixth seeds Franko Skugor and Nikola Mektic. The Scot however has played impressively with his 37 year old mixed doubles partner from Michigan, and looks to be making a fast recovery from hip surgery earlier this year. He has however ruled out a men’s singles return at the US Open starting next month.

25 year old Nicole Melichar won the mixed doubles title last year, partnering Austrian Alexander Peya. At 39 years of age however, Peya is not playing Wimbledon this year. Instead the Czech born Melichar is partnering 37 year old Bruno Soares. The Brazilian has won three mixed doubles Grand Slam titles. He won the US Open title twice partnering Russian Ekaterina Makarova in 2012, and Indian Sania Mirza in  2014. He has also won the 2016 Australian Open partnering Russian Elena Vesnina.

Yet to win a Wimbledon mixed doubles, Soares did make the final of SW19 in 2013 partnering American Lisa Raymond.

Despite being underdogs as far as the seedings are concerned, Murray and Williams have looked formidable so far and will be expected to give the number one seeds a tough match.
