Roland Garros drama abound as second favourite Ons Jabeur suffers huge upset
Roland Garros 2022 has seen a huge upset already as Ons Jabeur went out in the first round.
Behind dominant world number one and title favourite Iga Swiatek, Jabeur was the form player on the WTA tour heading into Roland Garros.
But the Tunisian talent has now been dumped from Roland Garros by Polish world number 52 Magda Linette 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 5-7.
Linette, 30, said to Marion Bartoli in her post-match interview: “I’ve had so many tough matches with Ons (Jabeur).
“Last year I lost to her in the third round, so I knew how difficult this was going to be.”
As Swiatek bosses the WTA tour, currently on a 28-match win streak, including nine in a row on clay, Jabeur entered Paris in excellent clay form herself.
She was 17-3 on the surface this season, triumphing in Madrid for her maiden WTA 1000 title before reaching the Italian Open final, only losing to Swiatek there.
Linette looked in trouble after losing the opening set when she took a medical time out off court.
When Bartoli asked her about the situation, she said: “I just tried to shift my attention to playing faster.
“The speed of my racket was much faster than the first set and [I tried] not to pay attention to my leg too much.”
It may seem that Linette has done a favour for compatriot Swiatek by ousting one of the biggest threats to her title run.
However, Jabeur would only have Swiatek in the final, the duo sitting at the top of the bottom and top halves of the draw respectively.
As such, Jabeur would have faced a number of tough opponents in order to take on the top seed even if she had come through this battle.
Next up, Linette takes on either Britain’s Harriet Dart or Roland Garros 2020 quarter-finalist Martina Trevisan of Italy for a place in the third round.
