American men’s tennis is currently in the midst of an ongoing drought.

For 22 years, no American man has won a Grand Slam singles title. The last player to do so was Andy Roddick, when he won the 2003 US Open.

Andy Roddick kisses the winner's trophy after defeating Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain during the US Open men's singles final at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Corona Park on September 7, 2003 in Flushing, New York. Roddick defeated Ferrero 6/3, 7/6(2), 6/3.

This is simply not good enough for a nation that has such a rich history in the sport – a history that includes a record 32 Davis Cup titles.

America’s current crop of stars have performed well over the last few seasons, but ultimately, the group have struggled to overcome the daunting dominance of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

Could the drought be ended in 2026?

Taylor Fritz is still the American man most likely to win a Grand Slam

There are a number of strong American talents on the ATP Tour. Perhaps the most notable is Ben Shelton, who won his first Masters 1000 title this year at the Canadian Open.

Then there is Learner Tien, an unbelievably talented youngster who won his first ATP Tour event earlier this month after defeating Cameron Norrie in the Metz Open final.

Frances Tiafoe, a 2024 US Open semi-finalist, would have been a contender a year ago. However, Tiafoe has underperformed this year and has questions to answer in 2026.

As things currently sit, Taylor Fritz remains America’s greatest hope.

The world number six, a winner of 10 ATP Tour titles [two this year], is simply the most consistently high-performing American player on the circuit.

Fritz, a finalist at the 2024 US Open, has proven he can challenge Carlos Alcaraz throughout the 2025 season, defeating the Spaniard at the Laver Cup and narrowly losing their contest at Wimbledon, and the ATP Finals.

Against Sinner, Fritz has not had the opportunity to prove himself recently, having not played the Italian since the final of the 2024 ATP Finals.

Aside from Novak Djokovic, Fritz is the biggest threat to Sinner and Alcaraz on the ATP Tour, and one should not bet against the American achieving Grand Slam glory in 2026.

He has already proven that he can make the final of a major, having done so at the 2024 US Open. Why couldn’t he go one step further?

Who will win the 2026 men’s Australian Open?

Taylor Fritz spoke about challenging for a Grand Slam title

While competing at the Japan Open in September, Fritz discussed his confidence ‘belief’ in regards to challenging for the biggest prizes in the sport.

“I think for a while now I felt capable of it if the right things click and I play well,” Fritz told Olympics.com.

“But I think just even last week, being able to beat Carlos and Sasha in back-to-back matches, obviously it’s not at a Grand Slam but I think that just does a lot for my belief that I can also do it in a big tournament.

“I’m someone who always said that if I feel like once I do something once, for me just mentally it feels much easier to repeat it and do it again.

“And yes, it’s not like we just played in the finals of a Masters or a Slam but even so, I felt a lot of nerves and pressure throughout the match and to me it felt like a big match.

“I think doing that, it does give me the belief that at another time, I will be able to do it.”
