Why Frances Tiafoe has big questions to answer in 2026 after disappointing season on the ATP Tour

While Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton have excelled on the ATP Tour this year, others have not been so successful.

Frances Tiafoe has struggled to perform at his best level throughout the 2025 campaign, suffering multiple early exits at tournaments.

Most recently, the American lost his opening match at the Shanghai Masters to world number 150 Yannick Hanfmann.

It has been a testing season for the 27-year-old, who split with coach David Witt in October. However, this is a situation from which he can most definitely recover.

Frances Tiafoe has big questions to answer in 2026

Frances Tiafoe’s 2025 season has most certainly been disappointing.

The American, who was a set away from reaching the 2024 US Open final, has underperformed for much of the year and seen his ranking fall as a result.

The American began the year ranked 18th in the world, but has since fallen to world number 30.

He has lost to numerous lower-ranked players throughout the year – players the American realistically should be beating.

Who will have the best comeback season in 2026?

Just this year, he has lost to world number 150 Yannick Hanfmann, world number 144 Jan-Lennard Struff, world number 58 Marton Fucsovics, and world number 349 Yosuke Watanuki.

In fact, Tiafoe lost to players ranked lower than him at 17 of the 22 events he played this season [including the Davis Cup].

His form simply must improve in 2026, or he will slip further down the ATP rankings.

Tiafoe has a lot to prove in 2026, starting at the Australian Open, where he reached the quarter-finals in 2019.

‘Who’s that third guy?’

In September, Frances Tiafoe spoke to Olympics.com about the motivation to challenge Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

He said: “There’s a couple more guys who’ve got to join them. I’m not saying beat them, but there’s got to be (other) guys – and that motivates me.

“I’m like, yo, who’s that third guy? Who’s that fourth guy?

“Novak [Djokovic] doesn’t count. He’s 40. I love him, but doesn’t count. He’s 40. He’s a GOAT, he’s the best player of all time. He’s not with those guys.

“Who is that other guy or two to be there and maybe beat these guys? That would be the quote-unquote Novak and [Andy] Murray – before Novak went and did what he did.

“Who are those guys? And there’s a bunch of guys who can be that guy, right? So that’s really motivating me. It’s like, ‘See big picture.’ That’s motivating.”

Sinner and Alcaraz recently contested their sixth final of 2025. Sinner won the contest, defeating Alcaraz 7-6, 7-6 in the final of the ATP Finals.
