‘Novak Djokovic vs Daniil Medvedev would be incredible’ says ATP star on his perfect Davis Cup final
This former top ATP pro and tournament director of the Davis Cup is hoping that the final will bring up yet another Djokovic Medvedev battle.
The Russians and Team Serbia both made it through to the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup, and with them came both Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev, the world number one and two.
Not only that, but with the two nations on opposite sides of the draw, they could meet in the final.
That is something that Spanish former world number seven and tournament director Fernando Verdasco is hoping for, especially after his nation crashed out in the group stage.
“If I look at it from the most impartial point of view possible,” he began telling Movistar.
“Despite the sadness of losing Spain we should be happy because the team that ‘replaces’ us is Serbia, with world number one Novak Djokovic.
“Unfortunately Spain were not able to reach the quarter-finals, yes. But at least we will have Djokovic and the Serbian team in those quarter-finals.
“Obviously it would be an incredible tie if Serbia and Russia face each other, especially because of that Djokovic Medvedev clash.”
The two men have played each other 10 times in their careers, including three times in 2021.
All three of those encounters came in finals, at the Australian Open and US Open and most recently at the Paris Masters.
Djokovic won in Australia and Paris while Medvedev denied the Serb the Calendar Slam in New York. Overall, Djokovic has six wins in the head to head while Medvedev has four.
Serbia must defeat Kazakhstan then Croatia to reach the final, while the Russians must overcome Sweden and Germany in their half of the draw.
