‘Novak Djokovic has no right to be here’ declares Wimbledon 2021 opponent
Wimbledon 2021 quarter-finalist Marton Fucsovics has expressed his opinion that Novak Djokovic should not be in Australia while unvaccinated.
The world number 38, who lost to Djokovic in that Wimbledon quarter-final before the Serb claimed his 20th Slam title, did not mince words when explaining his feelings about the situation.
Speaking with Hungarian outlet M4Sport, Fucsovics said: “People’s health is paramount, and there are rules that were outlined months ago, namely that everyone should vaccinate themselves, and Djokovic didn’t.
“From this point of view, I don’t think he would have the right to be here.”
Fucsovics also suggested that many players feel similarly about the permission given to Djokovic to play.
On Monday, Djokovic won one of the many battles surrounding him in Australia after his visa cancellation was overturned in court.
“I’m pleased and grateful that the judge overturned my visa cancellation,” he announced via social media with an image of him with his team on court at Melbourne Park.
“For now I cannot say more than thank you all for standing with me through all this and encouraging me to stay strong.”
It remains to be seen how crowds in Australia will respond to Djokovic if he takes to Rod Laver Arena next week.
The media atmosphere suggests that it could turn relatively hostile towards the nine-time champion following this new year’s saga.
For now I cannot say more but THANK YOU all for standing with me through all this and encouraging me to stay strong ๐๐๐๐
