Nick Kyrgios announces return event after lengthy injury hiatus
Nick Kyrgios has been announced to begin his 2025 season at the Brisbane International, returning to action after nearly two years on the sidelines.
Kyrgios has only played one match in the past two years, losing in the first round on the grass of Stuttgart to Yibing Wu in 2023.
During the past two seasons the Australian has been contending with various injury struggles, having undergone surgery on his knee and more recently his wrist.
The 2022 Wimbledon finalist is now looking ahead to his ATP Tour return, and spoke to 9News about his upcoming comeback, “Honestly, this is probably the best I’ve felt in two years.
“I played that amazing year in 2022. Then at the finals in Wimbledon and US Open, that’s when I started feeling some issues in my wrist. I had that wrist reconstruction and now I’m feeling amazing. It was a 15 miracle percent chance that I was going to get back to playing at this level and here we are. To get back out there in front of the home fans is going to be sick.”
Kyrgios had already confirmed that he would be entering the Australian Open next year using his protected ranking of World No.21, and it has now been revealed that he will begin his season in Brisbane.
The Brisbane International returned to the tour calendar earlier this year, and the tournament is now announcing its first entrants for the ATP 250 event in 2025.
Kyrgios is one of those as a former champion, having claimed the title back in 2018 after beating Ryan Harrison in the final.

The Brisbane International begins on 30th December, with Kyrgios set to play in the World Tennis League exhibition in Abu Dhabi prior to that.

Nick Kyrgios has been hinting at a potential return for a while now, but this time it feels like the real deal. Before this knee and wrist injury, Kyrgios was enjoying the best year of his career after reaching the Wimbledon final, but it seems unlikely that he will be able to refind that form once again after such a long time out. The good thing for Kyrgios is that he begins his return at home in Australia, so will be able to use the crowd to spur him on.
