Leylah Fernandez looking to ‘improve in every aspect’ following disappointing loss

US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez has had her next Slam cut short after losing to Australian world number 133 Maddison Inglis.

Fernandez was playing her first Major event as a seeded player, seeded 23rd this time around, but lost to the home talent 6-4, 6-2.

For Inglis it was a landmark first slam main draw victory, but for Fernandez it was a stark contrast to her impressive run in New York.

While the Canadian said she felt great physically before and during the match, she admitted that she had problems tactically on court.

“Today was just not a good day,” Fernandez said in her post-match interview.

“Too many mistakes, I’ll give credit to Maddie [Inglis] she played a great match.

“I unfortunately did not find the right solutions to get back in it and make it to a third set. But, it happens.”

Coming into your next Major after a surprise final appearance must be tough.

Fernandez was asked about how she feels in that situation and what she does to maintain her focus.

“I try to start every day at zero, thinking that on a tennis court it’s a 50/50 chance for both players, and just to work hard and find solutions as best as I can,” she explained.

“The only thing I can do right now is just get back on the court, put in the hours, work hard and just improve in every aspect.”
