Laura Robson believes the women’s singles draw is wide open at Roland Garros this year.

Iga Swiatek has won more Roland Garros titles than any other player in the women’s singles draw, having won the title in four of the last six years.

However, the Pole has not won a clay court title since Roland Garros in 2024, with Elina Svitolina beating Swiatek in the Italian Open semifinals.

When previewing the women’s singles draw at Roland Garros this year, Robson has named five potential contenders for the title.

Laura Robson claims there’s ‘five or six players’ who can win Roland Garros

Robson, who is a former British number one, spoke about Jannik Sinner being the clear favorite for the men’s singles title at Roland Garros on Sky Sports and was then asked if she thinks there is a standout in the women’s singles draw.

She responded by claiming that she currently has five or six players in mind, with Robson not mentioning Swiatek nor Elena Rybakina, but suggested that there were more potential names that she had not called out.

This includes world number one Aryna Sabalenka and defending Roland Garros champion Coco Gauff.

“No, in my mind there’s maybe five or six players,” said Robson. “Sabalenka, Gauff, Svitolina, maybe throwing a [Marta] Kostyuk in there after Madrid, yeah [Jessica] Pegula, the list goes on.

“But yeah, I think it’s exciting that there’s that much depth in the women’s game at the moment that it wouldn’t be a surprise to see any of those players take the title in a few weeks.”

Who are the top eight seeds at Roland Garros this year?

It has been a very interesting clay court season so far, with Rybakina the only player from the top four seeds at Roland Garros who has won a title on the surface so far.

Aryna Sabalenka has been struggling with a back issue, which appears to have contributed to her surprise defeats in Madrid and Rome against Hailey Baptiste and Sorana Cirstea, respectively.

Gauff reached the final of the Italian Open, but was beaten by Svitolina in the final, who is one of two Ukrainian WTA 1000 champions on clay this year after Marta Kostyuk’s victory in Madrid.

Amanda Anisimova has been struggling with a wrist injury and has not played a single match on clay this year, causing concern about whether the world number six will even play at Roland Garros.

The American has less than a week to be ready for the main draw of Roland Garros, which gets underway on Sunday, May 24.
