Amanda Anisimova will not be participating in the Italian Open this year.
The American, who reached two Grand Slam finals last year, was seeded sixth in Rome and had received a bye through to the second round.
Who do you think will win the women’s Italian Open this year? 🏆
There, she was due to face former French Open champion, Jelena Ostapenko.
Unfortunately for the 24-year-old, she has been forced to make a late withdrawal in the Italian capital.
Italian Open statement after Amanda Anisimova’s withdrawal
“Amanda Anisimova has withdrawn due to a left wrist injury. Elena Gabriela Ruse takes her place in the draw as a lucky loser,” a spokesperson for the Italian Open said in a statement on X [formerly Twitter].
“We wish Amanda a speedy recovery.”

The official announcement was published only 30 minutes before Anisimova was scheduled to play Jelena Ostapenko in the second round.
However, reports of Anisimova’s withdrawal began to filter through to tennis fans around an hour before she was scheduled to play.
It has been a difficult period for Anisimova, who has reached the semi-final stage at just one of the seven WTA events she has competed in this year.
Conversely, Jelena Ostapenko’s chances of causing a shock in Rome have now increased.
While Ostapenko is ranked outside the top 20 on the WTA Tour, she remains a player who can win almost any tournament on the circuit.

Where next for Amanda Anisimova?
Anisimova is not on the player list for the Strasbourg Open or Rabat Open, meaning she could make her next competitive appearance at the French Open.
Anisimova reached the fourth round at last year’s event, before losing in straight sets to world number one Aryna Sabalenka.
