Angelique Kerber withdraws from US Open since ‘two against one just isn’t fair!’
Angelique Kerber has become the latest player to withdraw from this year’s US Open, making the announcement alongside that of her pregnancy.
The former world number one has not played since losing in the third round of Wimbledon back in July.
Now, Kerber has revealed that she is pregnant with her first child and is expecting to give birth in Spring 2023.
As such, the 2016 US Open champion will not compete at the final Slam of the season as she begins her time away from the court.
“I really wanted to play the US Open, but eventually I decided that two against one just isn’t a fair competition,” the three-time Slam champion posted to Twitter.
The German is currently ranked 52nd in the world after dropping out of the world’s top 50 for the first time in over a decade.
However, the 34-year-old will no doubt not be fussed about that occurrence as she turns her attention to becoming a parent in the near future.
“For the next months, I will take a break from traveling the globe as a tennis player,” she continued on Twitter. “But then again, I believe it’s for the best possible reason! I will miss all of you.”
