Ons Jabeur joins select WTA group with second Slam final appearance
Ons Jabeur has become the first African women to reach the US Open final after defeating an in-form Caroline Garcia with a masterful display on Arthur Ashe Stadium.ย
Moreover, the Tunisian star has become the sixth woman to reach her first two Major finals at back-to-back events after she made it to the championship match at Wimbledon in July.
“It feels amazing,” Jabeur told Pam Shriver in her post-match interview. “After Wimbledon there was a lot of pressure on me. I’m really relieved that I can back up my results.”
After a frankly mediocre hard court build-up to the US Open, Jabeur has navigated the field superbly for the loss of just one set and defeating Garcia 6-1, 6-3 when the Frenchwoman had not been pushed beyond 6-4 in a set up until the semi-finals.
“[This] feels more real, to be honest with you, just to be in the finals again,” Jabeur continued in her press conference when comparing the feeling to making the final at SW19. “At Wimbledon I was kind of just living the dream, and I couldn’t believe it.
“Even just after the match, I was just going to do my things and not realising it was an amazing achievement already.”
As mentioned, five other women have achieved the feat of reaching their first two Slam singles finals at consecutive events, and all but one of them, Vera Zvonareva, won at least one of those two finals.
Those women were Martina Hingis, Jennifer Capriati, Zvonareva, Li Na and Naomi Osaka. Jabeur will hope that after making the final of Wimbledon and the US Open like Zvonareva she will not also lose both finals as the Russian did.
She faces world number one Iga Swiatek in the final after the Pole downed Aryna Sabalenka from a set down in the second semi-final.
