‘It’s impossible!’ – US Open sees first massive upset from Ukrainian qualifier

Simona Halep has become the first big name to fall at the US Open after she lost to Ukrainian qualifier Daria Snigur.

The 20-year-old, who won the 2019 Wimbledon girls’ singles, defeated the former world number one 6-2, 0-6, 6-4surround by the energy of Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Snigur, ranked 124th in the world, is making her Slam main draw debut at the US Open, with victory over Halep her first at tour level.

“I’m very happy,” Snigur said through tears of joy after the win. “[I have] no comments because it’s impossible for me now.

“I want to say thanks Simona for this great match, it was a great experience for me.”

Snigur played in Louis Armstrong Stadium in the US Open charity initiative ‘Tennis Plays for Peace’ to support humanitarian aid in Ukraine before the tournament.

“I think it helped me,” She explained. “But I’m very nervous, I tried to do my best. Of course this match [was] for Ukraine, for my family, for all the fans who supported me.

“I want to say thank you all. Slava Ukraini! (Glory to Ukraine!)”

Snigur will take on the winner of Rebecca Marino and Magdalena Frech in the second round.

The win also takes her to a provisional live ranking of 103rd in the world.
