Jannik Sinner has taken the decision not to represent Italy at the Davis Cup Finals in 2025.
Sinner, a two-time defending champion with Italy, has chosen not to participate in tennis’ premier international competition due to the busy tennis calendar.
On Monday, ahead of his participation at the Vienna Open, Sinner told Sky Sports Italy: “I’ve won the Davis Cup twice, my team and I decided this because the season at the end of the year is very long, and I need an extra week off to start training sooner.
“The goal is to get back on track in Australia, in the last two years, I haven’t been at the top because there was little time, so we made this decision – we’ll see.”

While Sinner’s absence will most certainly be a loss to the competition, the Davis Cup Finals will showcase other top ATP stars, including Carlos Alcaraz, Lorenzo Musetti and Francisco Cerundolo.
The Italian’s most recent competitive play came in Saudi Arabia, where he won the Six Kings Slam. Before that, Sinner was forced to retire from his round of 16 match against Tallon Griekspoor at the Shanghai Masters.
Angelo Binaghi’s reacts to Jannik Sinner’s impending Davis Cup Finals absence
Angelo Binaghi has overseen tennis in Italy for over two decades, having been made the President of Italian Tennis in 2001.
On Monday, following Sinner’s Davis Cup withdrawal, Binaghi offered his thoughts on Sinner’s decision to skip this year’s Davis Cup Finals.
As per Sky Sports Italy, Binaghi said: “For him and for all of us, the Davis Cup represents a symbol of pride and belonging, and we are certain that he will soon return to endorse the Italian national team with the same passion and determination as always.

“At the same time, I want to underline the great trust we place in the Group led by Filippo Volandri: a solid, united team, with the ability to transform and challenge into a further boost.
“Our players have already demonstrated that they can achieve extraordinary things together, and I am convinced that this time they will be able to best honor the colors of Italy.”
This week, Sinner is scheduled to compete at the Vienna Open. In the first round, he faces a tricky contest against Daniel Altmaier, a player he has previously lost to at a Grand Slam.
Italy still has an extremely strong Davis Cup team
Despite Jannik Sinner’s absence, Italy’s Davis Cup squad is still quite possibly the strongest of any team competing at the Finals.
The country boasts three top class singles players: Lorenzo Musetti, Flavio Cobolli and former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini.
Italy also has two extremely competent doubles players at their disposal. Andrea Vavassori is the world number 15 and a three-time Grand Slam mixed doubles champion.
As for Bolelli, he won the 2015 Australian Open while paired with Fabio Fognini.
In the 2024 Davis Cup Finals, Italy defeated the Netherlands 2-0. Matteo Berrettini and Jannik Sinner won their respective singles matches.
