Elina Svitolina has maintained a strong record on the WTA tour in 2021, now revealing a decision that could shift her trajectory.
The world number six currently holds a 41-20 win-loss record on the season. She has also added a 16th career title in 2021, coming at the WTA 250 Chicago Open in August. Svitolina also secured a historic Olympic bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, a first of any colour for Ukraine in the sport. Now, the former world number three has announced that she has split with Andrey Bettles, her coach of five years. “After 5 years and 11 titles together, Andy and I both agreed it was the right time to move our separate ways,” the 27-year-old wrote on Twitter. “I am very thankful for all his hard work and endless support. I wish him only the best in his future career!”
Svitolina’s career-high of world number three came while working with Bettles in late 2017. She has also maintained her position within the WTA top-10 during Bettles’ tenure. Svitolina has stayed inside the top-10 since 22nd May 2017. Her best Slam results have also come during her time with Bettles. She has twice reached the Australian Open quarter-finals in 2018 and 2019 and equalled her 2015 quarter-final appearance at Roland Garros in 2017 and 2020. In addition, she reached both the Wimbledon and US Open semi-finals in 2019.
