‘It was a big statement’ – Cameron Norrie addresses bold prediction from start of ATP season

Cameron Norrie has had a breakthrough year in 2021 and has spoken about how he backed himself from the start of his season.

The world number 13 began the year ranked 74th in the world. Now, Norrie is in contention for the season-ending ATP Finals for only the most elite men’s players.

Looking back to January, Norrie actually somewhat predicted his impressive rise up the rankings.

During an ATP season predictions video, Norrie named himself when asked which player would have a breakout season in 2021.

“I would like to say myself,” the Brit responded. “I think I’m going to have a breakout season this year. It’s obviously a big statement but I’ll back myself. Let’s see how it goes.”

Norrie has since reached six ATP finals this season, including claiming a maiden tour title in Los Cabos and a surprise Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells.

“That was a big statement from me at the beginning of the season,” Norrie said in reference to his prediction after defeating Federico Delbonis in the first round of the Paris Masters.

“I’ve backed it up I guess, slightly. But even to be in the [conversation] of that event this late in the year definitely shows I’ve had a lot of improvements.

“It’s pretty cool just to be in the Race [for the ATP Finals] and to be playing these matches with a little added pressure and a little added motivation. You’re kind of watching what everyone else is doing.

“It’s pretty interesting and it’s exactly where I want to be and exactly the matches I want to be playing.”
