‘It amuses me’ declares former British number one on Next Gen challenge of Andy Murray
Andrew Castle believes the way many players look to overpower Andy Murray is misguided, explaining that the Brit’s play is too clever for that.
In particular, Castle hails the backhand of Murray and just how impenetrable it is to attacks from his opponents.
The former world number one is famous for his ability to redirect power on the court and use his competitors speed of play against them.
“What amuses me is a new generation has come along, and they think they can get through his backhand, but forget about it,” Castle explained in a recent interview.
“You can’t get through his backhand.”
However, Castle did admit that the game has shifted while Murray has had to contend with injuries in the past few years.
“Where the game has moved on is the sheer speed that comparatively ordinary players are hitting at, [it applies] to players ranked 150 to 200,” he said.
“That represents a huge challenge for Andy, but he is up for it and he makes the difficult things look simple because he is so technically superb.
“Changing the pace of the game, chopping the ball deep.
“I love the way Andy uses the dynamics and dimensions of the court.
“He almost looks like a throwback in the way he plays the game compared to some of the young guys coming through, but I love watching him.”
After going out of the Australian Open in the second round, Murray returns to action at the ATP 500 ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
He sits at a more than three-year ranking high of 95th in the ATP rankings, last being within the top 100 in June 2018.
