‘I’m really worried for Alexander Zverev’ reveals Slam legend
A multiple Major champion sees Alexander Zverev as potentially vulnerable heading into his first round match at the US Open.
The Tokyo 2020 gold medallist faces American big-server Sam Querrey to kick off his US Open campaign.
And 1988 US Open champion Mats Wilander believes that if Zverev is not vigilant, he could crash out straight away.
“I am actually really worried about Alexander Zverev,” Wilander explained as an expert for Eurosport.
“He is playing against Sam Querrey in the first round. And obviously Sam Querrey is an American. He serves absolutely huge. He plays with no pressure at all.
“And when we have seen Zverev in the first round of Roland-Garros, he was down two sets to love to Oscar Otte and sometimes he plays these very passive matches early in the tournament.”
Zverev goes into the US Open off the back of his fifth Masters 1000 title having claimed the Cincinnati Open trophy.
In the past, questions have been raised over the German’s abilities over best of five sets. He will want to put those to rest and back up his 2020 US Open final appearance.
“His confidence will be very high,” admits Wilander. “But then the pressure and expectation will be high. So Zverev vs Querrey, wooo, it’s going to be a tough match.”
