‘I’m excited!’ French Open champs Swiatek and Barty set Madrid face-off
Ashleigh Barty and Iga Swiatek will do battle on the clay after both women overcame their second round opponents.
2019 French Open champion and world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty is confirmed to meet 2020 victor Iga Swiatek for the first time on-court following Swiatek’s victory over Laura Siegemund 6-3, 6-3.
“I don’t know why but I was kind of blocked on the match balls,” the Pole said in her post-match interview.
“It’s always kind of more pressure when you have a match point, but it doesn’t happen really often, the balls were [just] out so it was really annoying, but yeah I’m pretty happy that I closed it finally.”

Earlier in the day, Ashleigh Barty prevailed over Tamara Zidansek 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. This year is Swiatek’s debut in Madrid, and she feels it’s going well.
“I’m feeling better and better everyday because, you know, conditions here are pretty different,” she went on in her interview.
“I didn’t have the chance to play here last year and two years ago so I’m pretty excited and hopefully I’m gonna be able to see Madrid maybe after the tournament.”
Finally, when asked about having crowds at the Madrid Open this year, the 19-year-old had this to say:
“It’s amazing, I missed it so much, it’s a really important part of the game for me and I feel your support so thank you.”
