‘Iga Swiatek is pulling away’ – Chris Evert blown away by ‘dominant’ WTA number one

Chris Evert is thoroughly impressed by how Iga Swiatek is performing as world number one after she claimed a fourth consecutive title in 2022.

The 20-year-old added to her three WTA 1000 crowns in Doha and the ‘Sunshine Double’ of Indian Wells and the Miami Open by winning the 500 level Stuttgart Open last week.

Swiatek first became world number one on 4th April after previous number one Ash Barty unexpectedly retired and dropped from the ranking soon after.

Evert tweeted after the Pole won Stuttgart: “Wow! Iga Swiatek is on a mission.

“She is dominating women’s tennis, fourth tournament win in a row.

“[She is] pulling away from the pack of incredible talent.”

Evert had previously asserted that Swiatek would have eventually become number one whether or not Barty had retired last month.

The world number one has now won 23 matches in a row, joining Venus and Serena Williams in winning more than 20 consecutive matches at 20 years old.

Moreover, Swiatek now leads the rest of the WTA tour field by 2136 ranking points, more than the 2000 ranking points gained for winning a Slam title.

Swiatek sits on 7181 points while second and third Paula Badosa and Barbora Krejcikova have 5045 and 5043 points to their names respectively.

The Pole will next take to the court at the Madrid Open, beginning for the WTA main draw on 28th April.

She will be hoping to win an astounding fourth consecutive WTA 1000 title, fifth title in a row overall and first in the Spanish capital.
