‘If anyone deserves it it’s you’ – Novak Djokovic praises Daniil Medvedev on Slam triumph

Novak Djokovic was gracious in defeat as he accepted his runner-up trophy after Daniil Medvedev denied him the Calendar Slam.

Dreams of a 21st Major title and a historic Calendar Slam were dashed for Djokovic as the world number two ousted the Serb 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in front of a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Despite the disappointment, Djokovic was clearly touched by the support he received from the crowd, as well as recognising the special moment for his opponent.

“I would like to start off by saying congratulations to Daniil [Medvedev],” Djokovic said in his post-match interview.

“Amazing, amazing match. Amazing tournament. If there is anyone that deserves a Grand Slam title right now, it’s you. So well done, absolutely.

“You’re one of the greatest guys on the tour, we get a long very well. I wish you many more Majors to follow, I’m sure you’ll be on this stage in the future, for sure.”

Medvedev had twice been in Slam finals before, including against Djokovic in the Australian Open final this season.

Djokovic then turned to the crowd to give his thanks.

“I was thinking in both scenarios, kind of visualising myself in front of you guys and what will I say?

“And I would like to say that tonight, even though I have not won the match, my heart is filled with joy and I’m the happiest man alive because you guys made me feel very special on-court.

“You guys touch my soul. I’ve never felt like this in New York. I love you guys, thank you so much for the support, everything you’ve done tonight for me.

“I love you and I’ll see you soon, thank you.”
