Nick Kyrgios Australian Open 2022

‘I served f***ing well today!’ – Nick Kyrgios thrilled with Australian Open display

Nick Kyrgios might easily have missed the Australian Open after contracting Covid last week, but the talent from Down Under has wowed the home crowd on his return.

The 26-year-old ousted British qualifier Liam Broady 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in a signature performance on the John Cain Arena.

After the match, Kyrgios was surprised both by how well he played as well as by the energy from the crowd.

“Obviously when I tested positive it wasn’t great news a week out of the Australian Open,” he told Jim Courier in his post-match interview.

“I was lucky enough to have a tennis court and I just hit some serves. Obviously I served f***ing well today.

“I don’t know what I’ve done to this crowd because you guys are a zoo now.

“You guys are out of control. But I’m just super happy to be here again.

“We’ve all had a tough couple of years so just to be back here at the Australian Open again, and I’m just happy to be in front of you guys again.

“Honestly it’s just so much fun.”

The fun showed from Kyrgios as he pulled out some tricks to capture and entertain the fans.

He won a point early on off of a risky underarm serve and was constantly interacting with spectators in the rocking stadium.

But the next match is a big ask for Kyrgios as he will face world number two and US Open champion Daniil Medvedev for a spot in the third round.

Medvedev reached the Australian Open final in 2021, only losing to world number one Novak Djokovic then.
