‘I don’t believe in talent’ declares top 10 ATP star

Hard work and not talent is the biggest deciding factor in becoming the best player one can be according to this breakthrough ATP top 10 star.

Jannik Sinner enjoyed a thoroughly impressive 2021 season, claiming four ATP titles to add to his maiden crown at the Sofia Open in 2020.

Having started the year ranked 36th in the world, the 20-year-old Italian went from strength to strength to climb to a current ranking of 10th in the world, just one behind his career-high of ninth.

Now, the young talent has asserted that hard work and dedication are most important for making it as a top pro.

“Talent does not exist for me, one has to earn it,” explains Sinner in an interview by Intesa San Paolo.

“You can have slightly better skills, but if you work you’ll go higher. The one who works is the one who has talent.

“I’ve realised you can train every single thing: physically, technically, and most of all mentally.

“In tennis you have to be very strong mentally in every moment of the match.

“And that in the end makes you win good matches, even if you play bad matches.”

Sinner reached the fourth round of Roland Garros and the US Open in 2021, and reached a maiden Masters 1000 final at the Miami Open in April, losing there to Hubert Hurkacz.

While he narrowly missed out on qualifying outright for the ATP Finals in Turin, he did play two matches as an alternate after the withdrawal of compatriot Matteo Berrettini.

He hammered Hurkacz 6-2, 6-2 before pushing US Open champion and world number two Daniil Medvedev all the way to a deciding set tiebreak, eventually losing to the Russian.
