‘Hopefully he hasn’t sold it!’ – Alexander Zverev has no idea where his Olympic gold medal is
Alexander Zverev is not currently in possession of his own Tokyo 2020 singles gold medal, having lent it to his brother Mischa.
The world number three revealed that the medal is missing after efficiently despatching Aussie John Millman 6-4, 6-4, 6-0 in just under two hours to reach the Australian Open third round.
Dylan Alcott, a three-time Paralympic gold medallist and Paralympic silver medallist, asked Zverev to tell the crowd what it feels like to add such an accolade to his collection of titles.
“You can agree with me on this, nothing compares to a gold medal. Nothing compares to the Olympics,” Zverev said.
“I’m standing here on [Rod Laver Arena] at the Australian Open, I love you guys but a gold medal is something that I think every athlete dreams about, [no matter] the sport.
“A gold medal is just something very special and there is just nothing in the world that compares with it, especially if you have four!”
Alcott then asked the age old question that he himself has heard many times, where do you keep your medal?
“That’s actually a good question because my brother took it for a media appearance once,” Zverev answered.
“He didn’t give it back to me yet. I don’t know where it is [and I haven’t] for the past five months.
“So, hopefully he hasn’t sold it on eBay or something like that!”
No doubt Mischa is just holding onto it for safe-keeping while Sascha is jetting around the world to compete on the tour.
The German will take on Moldovan qualifier Radu Albot next in the third round.
