Hamburg Open 2022 Tournament Preview
The Hamburg Open 2022 brings the final ATP 500 clay court event of the 2022 season and the penultimate week of European clay competition on the WTA tour before the North American hard court swing in the build-up to the US Open.
For the first time, the Hamburg Open will stage a combined men’s and women’s event, with the men’s tournament a 500 level event and the women’s a 250 level affair.
Some of the best players from both tours will take to the clay of Hamburg in what will for many be their last matches on the surface in 2022.

Dates
Unlike in 2021, when the ATP and WTA events took place in successive weeks, the men’s and women’s tournaments will be run near simultaneously in 2022.
The WTA main draw will begin on Sunday 17th July and culminate in the women’s final on Saturday 23rd July.
The ATP main draw kicks off and finishes a day later, beginning Monday 18th July and ending with the men’s final on Sunday 24th July.
Players
Both events have a draw of 32 with eight seeds and no byes.
The women’s draw boasts plenty of top talent, including world number two Anett Kontaveit and world number 12 and Roland Garros 2022 semi-finalist Daria Kasatkina as the top two seeds.
2021 Roland Garros champion Barbora Krejcikova makes her tournament debut as the third seed.
Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania returns to defend her 2021 title, while the woman she beat in the 2021 final, home talent Andrea Petkovic, will look to claim the title herself in 2022.
Another German star in young talent and Wimbledon quarter-finalist Jule Niemeier joins the field too.
Among the men, two-time Masters 1000 champion Carlos Alcaraz comes in as the top seed in his first competition since Wimbledon.
World number eight and Hamburg Open 2020 champion Andrey Rublev will be seeded second.
Third seed Diego Schwartzman will be looking to improve on his best ever result of reaching the quarter-finals, whereas fourth seed Pablo Carreno Busta comes into the event as defending champion.
Gael Monfils returns to ATP action after injury, and two-time Hamburg Open champion Nikoloz Basilashvili will hope to make it three crowns in the German city.
Young talent and Roland Garros quarter-finalist Holger Rune makes his tournament debut at the Hamburg Open 2022 as he looks to put a loss streak of four behind him.
