‘Great to see’ – Roger Federer impressed by post-hiatus Novak Djokovic level

Roger Federer was delighted by the level of tennis displayed by Novak Djokovic in the former world number one’s first competitive match for over two months.

Djokovic took to the court against Frances Tiafoe in his first battle since the Wimbledon final in July, dismantling the American to the tune of 6-1, 6-3, putting Team Europe 6-4 up on Team World at the Laver Cup.

During the encounter during one of the change of ends, Federer made sure to tell Djokovic how impressed he was by the way the Serb was performing.

“Such control, it’s great to see after so many months off,” before adding “Keep it up” after Djokovic thanked the Swiss for the complement.

Unusually, the win was actually Djokovic’s first at the Laver Cup after he lost both his singles and doubles match the last time he played the event in Chicago in 2018.

I’m really glad to continue the run [of form from Wimbledon],” the 21-time Major champion said of the win over Tiafoe. “Pretty decent match from my side. I was seeing the ball very well, no doubt about it. I haven’t done many things wrong today and I couldn’t be happier with the return to the tour.”

The win is Djokovic’s eighth in a row and is 17-1 in his last 18 matches, only losing to Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals of the French Open in that time.
